dafla 4 years ago

Wow. I love looking at the list, but as always, wonder at some of the rankings. How did "I want it that way" by Backstreet Boys beat out some of those in the lower 50's? They must have done it by radio plays or something. Oh well, at least Britney can be proud she got in the top 10.

Awesome hub! I missed it on TV, but reading through the list definitely brought back some memories. It's just funny when you read through it that there are songs like "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Loser" (two of my all-time favorites) on the same list as MMMBop and Ice Ice Baby. LOL. It's a diverse list :)

safenet 3 years ago

Cool list - but how do you tell the difference between 85 and 75. Aren't these ratings totally subjective?

Steiff Bear 3 years ago

This is the perfect application for tivo.. Record it all, fast foward through the commercials and you can get through all 100 in less than 2 hours...

yahya 3 years ago

this list sucks. VH1 sucks. these guys promote awful music. backstreet boys on 3rd place. I think it shows how bad the list and the people in VH1 are.

Josie 3 years ago

This list was a load of rubbish and proof that MTV and VH1 just ruins what is good about music. How did Nsnyc beat Radiohead?? Where's Pulp, Blur, The La's, Stone Roses, Placebo ETC? Why is wonderwall so far up the list and don't look back in anger not even on there for Oasis??This list is utter shite. Fact. Only about 5 of the songs on it deserve to be on the list. This compliation is so shameful, the 90's was an excellent decade for music, on of the best and yet some idiots who apparently know so much about 'great' music comes up with this. I mean backstreet boys THIRD?? They were CRAP, their songs were for 8 year olds. How anyone can think this legitimate or correct is beyond me.

Shiesty 3 years ago

How do you have a list of VH1's 100 greatest songs of the 90s and do not include a group like Boyz II Men, but you put En Vogue on there. End of the Road, I'll Make to You, or Motownphilly. This list is flawed. That's such an insult.

thaddeus 3 years ago

SMASHING PUMPKINS anyone? Come on. The bigest and best band of the era couldn't land with "1979", "Mayonnaise", or "Disarm". And no Boyz II Men is a damn shame too. This list is a grave error.

shanaloho 3 years ago

i just want everyone to know that vh1 didnt make up this list.. people voted on it. so how about everyone stop blaming vh1 for coming up with a bad list!! if you dont like it then you should have voted for it yourself

d-wrek 3 years ago

Don't forget about the Stone Temple Pilots. Come on! They were awesome! Something like "Plush" would have been good.

I can not believe there is no Aerosmith songs??????'

Crazy and Crayin'..............................................

some1 3 years ago

whats the song on here about the couple that runs away???

Jeff 3 years ago

I still can't believe that Savage Garden's "Truly Madly Deeply" didn't make the list. Not only should it have been included, but it would have made my top 20. That song is quintessential 90's! And no "Crash" by DMB?

Bobert 3 years ago

Closer from Nine Inch Nails didn't make the list?

This list fails.

shaun 3 years ago

These songs for the most part ARE the growing pains of my early adult life... but alot and I do mean alot are just plain Jane pop culture. There are some true geniouses though.

vicky 3 years ago

what about Aerosmith's Crazy, Cryin' and Amazing??? When I think of the 90's that's all that comes to my mind

hanson "mmmbop"? You're kidding, right?

NO Smashing Pumpkins?! WTF? Jewel sounds like a cow in a blender. Remember when that moron got clowned by Kurt Loder? HAHA, idiot.

Smashing Pumpkins are infinitely better than half this list.

Pierson 3 years ago

How do you have a top 90's list with no boyz II men? not ONE Nas song? illmatic? this list is flawed big time

JJ 3 years ago

How the hell does JEFF BUCKLEY not make this list. I am fine with most the list but how can he not make it. "Hallelujah", "Lover You Should Have Come Over", "Last Goodbye", any one of those

the thing about an online poll seems a little hard to believe to me... It weird songs like Living La Vida Loca> and Wonderwall were ranked so low on the list, while it's surprising that many forgotten artists like C+C music factory, Snow or some good but not so famous artists like Liz Phair, Dunkan Sheik or Marcy's playground did appear in a list that doesn't feature any Smashing Pumpkins, Blind Melon, Foo fighters, STP, NIN, Dave Mathews Band, Blur, RATM, Offspring other things to mention about the list: 1.-they ranked "Time of your life" by Green day but they didn't rank "Basket Case" which is a much bigger hit2.-No songs by the Smashing Pumpkins, Foo fighters, STP, NIN, Dave Mathews Band were ranked3.-"You oughtta know" is my favourite Alanis M. song, but i thought "Ironic" was a much bigger hit. wasn't it?4.- What happend to songs like "Runaway Train" or "Plush" or "No Rain" "Song 2" or "prett Fly for a white guy?? ?? all of them were big?? weren't they?

kipare 3 years ago

That list is not good, how in the world it is possible that they do this countdown and do not include don´t speak- no doubt, i cannot believe it, and the backstreet boys on the 3??? there is Definitively somethin' wrong with that list

Bear 3 years ago

where is live forever and don't look back in anger by Oasis?in bloom nad come as you are by Nirvana? My iron lung, just, the bends, high and dry and paranoid android by Radiohead?i believe i can fly by R kelly?why is backstreet boys, britney spears and spice girls on the list?CRAP!!!

Bear 3 years ago

how dare VH1 left out TEARS IN HEAVEN by ERIC CLAPTON???where basket case by green day?

Drax 3 years ago

WTF? No NIN, no Smashing Pumpkins, no Guns N' Roses, no Basket Case, no Offspring and let's assume it: Limp Bizkit was big at the end of the 90's.

Living Colour? Nope.

Stone Temple Pilots? Nope.

Dude, this is like... the worst list ever.

Dorothy 3 years ago

This list really suck!!!

Vh1 you've done it again, ommitted most of the greatest bands singers and perfomers that really matter in time and put special attention on the billboards.

Congrats vh1!! ("music" channel my ass!!)

JAG 3 years ago

I've got a few questions for u all:

What about no mercy? what about Ace of Base? what about Reel 2 Real??

What about Gangsta Paradise from Coolio????

And what about the freekin Macarena from Los del Rio?????????????

I MEAN COME ON THIS LIST IS LACKING MOST OF THE 90's REALLY GOOD MUSIC

Jers 3 years ago

Dudes... what about "Bitter Sweet Symphony" The Verve?

i quite agree with this people about the list... its not that great'

nemo 3 years ago

80 out of 100 are pure rubbish... and they missed (besides Jeff Buckley, the Verve, Offspring and many others already pointed out) the greatest rock albums of the first nineties. REM (Losing my religion is NOT on the list???), Queen (almost the whole Innuendo album should be there) are totally ignored in favour of BACKSTREET BOYS?

Heather Q 3 years ago

Um...where is Savage Garden. They only had how many # ones?

Jeremy 3 years ago

This should be called most pop songs from the 90's, greatest?!?! how can it be the greatest songs from the 90's with no songs like "november rain" or "plush". hell guns and roses should have 5 songs on here, list is a joke, its for people who just listen to mainstream pop rock

Cloudff7 3 years ago

hey where the hell is bittersweet symphony and they got thata shit of sinhead oconnor and how in jesus name wonderwall is so far from the first place it should be at least in top ten. and come on i dont want to miss a thing what the hell were they thinking.

The Viper 3 years ago

1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins should be in that list...

THIS LIST SUCKS

Luis MINCHEZ 3 years ago

EXCELENTE!

Derek 3 years ago

Some good songs listed, but man they always leave off so much. They obviously completely ignored the entire shoegazer scene and didn't touch on Brit-pop at all save for Oasis. They always do that ...... for prove see the 80's list ... NOT ONE FUCKING SMITHS SONG, are you kidding me?!?!?!

Ashleigh 3 years ago

How is there no limp bizkit?

Faith should of been on there right next to Freak on a leash by Korn. This list blows, many other artist are lacking.

bill c 3 years ago

Why no songs by the Cure? Lovesong? shiite!

rigo 3 years ago

ok say my name is a great song... but it didnt chart in the 90's!! it was RECORDED in 99' it charted in 2000!! sheesh thought it was the 90s not new millenium!!!

Jeriel 3 years ago

Where the hell is juicy by Biggy, November rain by GNR and Boz ll men end of the road. The backstreet boys at #3 seems off they didn't have the third best song of the 90's. And the biggest crime on this list wonderwall somehow got 35, it should drop 30 spots to number 5

Ummm... where are: "No Rain" by Blind Melon, "The Rockafela Skank" by Fat Boy Nookie" by Limp Bizkit, "Ants Marching" by DMB,

AND the BEST selling single EVER! which was NUMBER ONE on VH1's own "100 Greatest One Hit Wonders" list... "The Macarena"! These just popped to the top of my head.

I think they accidentally deleted their top 5: No Doubt "Don't Speak", Smashing Pumpkins "1979", Nine Inch Nails "Closer", Soul Asylum "Runaway Train", Boyz II Men "I'll Make Love To You"...

Steven 3 years ago

Where's Garth Brooks "Friends In Low Place"? That song changed country music. If Achy Breaky Heart made it, this songs should definitely be on the list.

konar hall 3 years ago

your gonna sit there and tell me that iris from the goo goo dolls was not even on the list!!! are you out of your motha phuckin mind!!!

patrick 3 years ago

soooo they have en vogue but no rage against the machine. . . .i think that list list should take songs that are still incredibly popular into account liike creep by radiohead is insanely popular and its only 31?. . . .No Nine INch Nails? Rage against the machine? Shmashing Pumpkins? The offspring? cmon VH1!. . . .and why was "I alone" by Live on there and not "Lighning crashes" which if i can recall was a massive hit

Craig 3 years ago

Better list than that ridiculous 80s list. Houston doesn't belong here, certainly not above "Nothing Compares 2 U," which truly is one of the 10 best. Actually 1/2 of the Top 10 is legit, I'm not sure there was anything in the Top 10 on the 80s aside from "When Doves Cry" and "Bille Jean" that was even decent.

Obviously Celine, Mariah and VAnilla don't belong here either but at least a lot of these are indeed great.

ryan 3 years ago

Mariah Carey should have had at least 5 songs in there.

Always Be My Baby, Vision of Love, Emotions, Fantasy, One Sweet Day

Janet Jackson should have had 2 songs in there

some great songs listed here!! some fantastic memories of my childhood too, especially songs like 'Wonderwall' and 'Smells like Teen Spirit'. I think Backstreet Boys do deserve a place in the list, but with 'Backstreets Back' instead- what a tune!! Also, what about all the classic 90's dance tracks like 'No Limits' by 2Unlimited? Or 'Set you Free' by NTrance?

Ah nostalgia

WHY THE HELL IS JANET JACKSON NOT IN THERE???SHE'S THE SECOND MOST SUCCESFUL ARTIST OF THE 90'S NEXT TO MARIAH CAREY!!!

VH1 is trippin.. sublime were HUGE in the 90s... ridiculus

Jefe 2 years ago

Why not November Rain of Guns N Roses? Is ridiculus..this song is the best of 90s and even stay in the top 10.

Ed 2 years ago

How "1979" by Smahsing Pumpkins was left off this list is beyond me. This list is horrible. "Wonderwall" should be much higher

TheMarquise 2 years ago

Um...NIN please? Maybe The Perfect Drug, or at least Closer? Maybe I ran in weird circles, but I remember both of those videos being big and the songs were all over the radio.

Stoud 2 years ago

there's not one single "No Doubt" song on this list, but somehow songs by britney, nsync, and backstreet boys make it on? .......

What are you smokin VH1?

I can understand a majority of the picks for this list, but I do have a question...no Garbage?? They had several killer singles out in the mid 90's and I believe they deserve a spot on the list

musicman78 2 years ago

umm i do believe "closing time" by semisonic should be top 40, let alone not even on the list! wonderwall deserves better than 35 say 10-20 range, sublime should be represented, and they give too much slack to crap bands that were on the radio. And even if it is the most annoying song of the 90's, Smash Mouths "All Star" should be on the list

musicman78 2 years ago

oh and forgot. Last Kiss by Pearl Jam. Sure it was a cover of the 60's original, but for those who have heard it can agree that it deserves recognition

Nazgul 2 years ago

ok listen people voted for this on vh1's website.because most of those people don't have any musical taste what do you expect.even i would voted for would.fear of the dark, thunderstruck, hard as a rock, fuel, get a grip, sex type thing, hangar 18,sleep now in the fire, painkiller, and for many songs of the offspring

mike 2 years ago

I was brought up on mostly 80s music. There are so very good songs though in the 90s. A lot of people were so into the Internet because it first came out in the mid 90s, that I think we missed a lot of the great songs.

Rene 2 years ago

how come all the small things isnt on the list, its way better than most of the songs on this list

joshua  2 years ago

i imagine i'd get stick for this, whilst i can't argue with the list, i do find it weird that michael jackson - in particular "black or white" isn't on here.

j.smo 2 years ago

Okay wait, I didn't read all the comments but I did notice people complaining that certain songs didn't make it on the list but "they were top songs back then," or "this song wasn't at (whatever position) back then." You have to remember, people WENT ONLINE and VOTED for their favorite songs and whoever got whatever percentage of votes was put in that position. VH1 did nothing except calculate the list and air it.

I love how absolutely terrible this list is. And how totally predictable it is. Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears are both in the top ten. Enough said.

It just goes to show you how stupid VH1 is and everybody who works there. Fucking idiots

The people that commented are all ruh-tards (watch the hangover). Most of the comments go thusly, "wtf, where's <insert random song name>, etc." If they bothered to scroll up and down they would see there is barely any consistency in the songs that were supposedly left out. And theres like hundreds of songs to choose from. Did they stop to think the list can only be so long? Yeah some songs will get left out. The only thing that got left out with with any aggreable between post consistency was the verve's bittersweet symphony. Wow you turds agree on one song that got left out. One dude even said a song got left out that was ON THE FREAKING LIST. Please stop and think before you post your inane comments and do me a favor and stfu anyway just in case.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPEND TO "LOU BEGA MAMBO No5"

bloop 2 years ago

Yes, I have a definite problem with Smashing Pumpkins not even making this list. And Everlong also deserved to reach the list, and the patronising "at least it made #104" token clip was very undeserved. Time of Your Life is most definitely, in my opinion, a way better Green Day hit, but I assume people agreed with me, which is why Basket Case didn't make the cut? I also assume they preferred not to have more than one song by an artist on the list, because I would definitely have put Come as You Are and Rape Me on that list, to add to the Nirvana. The complete lack of the Offspring hits also irked me, as did the fact that an awesome song like Iris was beaten by Christina Aguilera. In a song that wanted you to "rub her the right way". Moreover, the fact that Guns N Roses, Nine Inch Nails, Aerosmith, Marilyn Manson, Placebo, Limp Bizkit, Incubus, etc didn't appear on the list makes me feel that they picked some Rock favourites, then totally ignored others of the genre.

And also-No Bjork. It's Oh So Quiet? Whaaat?

Finally: Sweet Dreams-Eurythmics. HOW DID THAT NOT MAKE IT ONTO THIS LIST?????

Whether it's VH1 or the voters who picked the songs isn't the problem. It's the total lack of representation this list provides. But who am I to say anything? I'm discovering these bands now, being about 6 when the nineties ended. And I can see a problem.

No Stone Temple Pilots? Aww. =(

That's disappointing... and The Offspring, either? Nine Inch Nails?

I wish both "Man in the Box", "Even Flow" and "Black Hole Sun" had been higher; those are amazing songs. And I'm really glad "Smells Like Teen Spirit" made it to the top. =D

-sigh- I still would have liked to see "Interstate Love Song", "Plush" or "Trippin' On a Hole in a Paper Heart" on here, though! And "Closer", "Only" or "Head Like a Hole"... still good though.

PEOPLE!! STOP BLAMING VH1 FOR THIS LIST! Vh1 put up 1000s of 90s songs up on there website and let the people of the public vote on the songs. So stop blaming vh1 and blame yourself for the list! And why bring MTV into the picture? That isnt even related you morons!! However, i do believe there is some faulties. Wonderwall needs top 10 material, and backstreet boys need to get into the 85-100 chunk of the list. However, i think the public got it right when they put smells like teen spirit as #1. I mean, come on. Nirvana is the king of 90s music. And, it put Washington (my home state) on the map. Seattle is the kingdom for grunge. Here are some songs that i think need to be on the list:

"Basket Case" - Green Day

"Song 2" - Blur

"Bittersweet Symphony" - The Verve

"Rump Shaker" - Wreckx-N-Effect

"I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" - Aerosmith

"Say It Ain't So" - Weezer

"All The Small Things" - Blink-182

"Lithium" - Nirvana

Any song from Boys II Men, and some Guns 'N' Roses.

Other than that, this list is ok.

I don't get why some many people are like "BackStreetBoys are number 3?!?!!? OMGWTFFF". Okay. Whether you liked them or not, they were insanely popular in the 90's. Many of their songs got so much airtime it's ridiculous. There are still fairly popular today, their last tour was sold-out.

It makes sense that they are #3 based on sheer popularity at the time and play time in the 90's.

I'm shocked Prozzak didn't make the list. They were so freaking popular in the 90s.

Glad to see Nirvana at number 1. There are so many songs I wished would've made the list... didn't even hear about the movie. Oh well. VH1/MTV/MuchMusic suck ass anyways.

I realize this list was a popular vote, but come on people?

BITTERSWEET SYMPHONY - THE VERVE

If the Verve had had it their way, they wouldn't have wanted the mainstream popularity that this song got.

But since the greedy Rolling Stone lawyers took the rights to the song, they spread the song around everywhere. It was on commercials and in movies and frickin' everywhere. People heard this song, they knew damn well it was an amazing song, but refused to vote for it.

This should show you the sad, sad state of music in America.

And All the Small Things or another Blink 182 song-they were 90's royalty.

Yall need to stop getting mad. VH1 put the songs on list of chart popularity mainly. Alot of rap songs didn't fair high on the charts. So this list is kinda correct. And grunge and alternative was the most popular genre so it is fitting that it got alot of songs.

I was born in 89 so to me this list is perfect cause when Backstreet boys and Nsync and all bubblegum pop was big I LOVED it but i was also in elementary school. Hey TRL played them all religiously and those record sales were ridiculous radios played them constantly I'm sorry but I agree with it plus these songs were all voted for by fans so that must mean you guys that disagree with this list didn't take the time to vote so you only have yourselves to blame don't get me wrong I had an older sister who listened to Green Day,No Doubt, Nirvana and eventually so did I but this list is my childhood to a perfect T.

I just wanted to say my twelve year old brother could have put the top 100 90's songs together better than VH1 veiwers. The problem is only a few people actually logged on to their website to vote for the top songs... these people were completely mistaken in their accuracy of good music. First of all so many great bands are missing and a lot of the good ones on there should have been a lottttt higher. VH1 should have seen the results to the top 100 votes and decided that people are not capable of voting properly and made their own lists based on factual evidence and which songs were in fact awesome. Come on, you know a bunch of teens made the backstreet boys so high. Look at cd's they sell in stores of good 90's music, you don't see the backstreet boys because they were just a teen fantasy of a hot body and semi-okay songs. Nothing more. I vote VH1 makes their own list and the veiwers can suck it up and accept their precious boy band fantasy did not make good music. Yes they were popular... but to get the #3 spot???? Sickining. In no way shape or form do they deserve to be higher than half the people on that list.

One sweet day by Mariah Carey and boyz to men was number 1 for 16 weeks in a row that is a record. Maybe I missed it but if that song is not on the list then why even make a top songs of the 90s list becasue that was clearly one of them.

Sublime89 2 years ago

smells like teen spirit son!!! but i cant believe theres no Sublime on there:( or Jumper by third eye blind

ginuwine 2 years ago

Kelly 2 years ago

This is a great list and as one of the "older" viewers who can actually remember the 90's all the way through, I think it's a great list (with the exception of missing Boyz II Men).

I just find it funny that so many people are commenting on the list that "insert singer/song here" should have been on the list, yet I doubt any of you voted for the top 100 songs. Also, the same people look like fools when they can't even spell correctly. I take this list more seriously than half the comments on this page.

P.S. - For those of you that are complaining about the Backstreet Boys and Britney spears being on the list, you know that you're the same people who were begging your parents to take you to those concerts 10 years ago and rushing home from school just so you can see who was #1 on TRL so stop complaining when you know you supported them. It's not all about rock, rap, and/or alternative music. Grow up!

Folks, this isn't the 100 greatest songs of the 90's list.

It's the most 100 popular.

And there's still no Red Hot Chili Peppers, No Tupac, and no Boyz II Men. This list is off.

Malik  2 years ago

Oops! I saw RHCP. But, there's still no Pac or Boyz II Men.

How are you going to talk about 90's songs and they aren't on there. Vh1 makes some pathetic lists.........

Yeah this list sucks and all, but I've got to do something no one else has done yet (that I've seen). And therefore, I give MAAAD props to Radiohead for making it. They deserve it, if not more, and apparantly VH1 has never heard of "Just", "Fake Plastic Trees", "High and Dry", "No Surprises", "Karma Police" or "Paranoid Android".

koco 2 years ago

oh shut the fuck up all the backstreet boys' haters. just because you dont like them doesn't mean that they "don't deserve" to be in this list. they were insanely popular in the 90s, being the most successful band of all times and hell yeah, it's because they make GOOD music. i'm not saying that others don't, but get out, they DO deserve the #3 position

koco 2 years ago

and added to that, have you ever really listened to Backstreet Boys' songs, or you just "oh damn, another gay band..." and skip them? you guys want your fav to be on the list, but don't be like kids to deny how well others have done. you people disgust me

its the top 100 most popular songs of the 90's not your personal favorite songs of the 90's...its not gonna include random radiohead tracks and the only rock songs are gonna be ones that crossed over to pop...same with rap...sure they missed some songs but overall pretty accurate !!!

Where is the #1 best selling song of the entire decade on this list!? NOWHERE and why not? BRYAN ADAMS- EVERYTHING I DO

Lauren 2 years ago

This list blows. No Sublime, really? They could have easily replaced all the crap pop with more grunge and angry chick music. That (along with the hiphop, though I agree Crossroads by Bone Thugs deserved to be on that list) really encapsulated the 90's. Though the Britney Spears, N*Suck came out late 90's, the pop craze was really the dawn of the 2000's.

Disappointing...

VH1 compiles their list based on Sales, Radio play, and people whining. The reason your favorite songs aren't on the list people is because some people bought more albums by these artists, some radio stations played more songs by these guys, and more people hung out on VH1.com whining about how awesome these guy's songs were. I absolutely hate half the songs on that list but truth be told the 8 year olds that listened to back street boys bought more records than i did, requested more songs than I did, and by god they waste their lives on VH1.com more than I do. don't blame music experts because their measurement tools are accurate. whiny teenagers with bad taste and excess allowances drive the music industry...

utter shite list. radiohead's "creep" is no way near their best song. sure it's their most popular song. but does that make it their best song? i think not. i believe creep shouldn't be on there at all (but it's an ok song i guess). BUT, if it was the 100 most POPULAR songs of the 90's, then i would agree with it. smell's like teen spirit is a very overrated song. where is supergrass aswell? -.-

garrett 2 years ago

Can anyone please explain to me the absence of Dave Matthews Band form this list?

dougrad 2 years ago

The problem with this list is that it includes too many songs from the 90's that are cheesy novelty songs (either intended or because of time), and too many songs that sound terribly dated. Vh1's Best of the 80's list was good because it primarily included songs that still sound good today, and ones you wouldn't be embarrased to have people catch you listening to in 2010. And you know they could have really screwed up that 80's list as well, with all the bad music from that decade. But really, you won't find too many people still listening to lot of the Top 30 artists on this 90's list, which includes MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Hanson, Backstreet Boys, Ricky Martin, N'Sync, Spice Girls, etc. The list should be called "Vh1's most popular songs of the 90s," not "The Greatest."

Paul 2 years ago

Man either its all little kids here or people are just real stupid! When they say the 100 greatest songs that means the songs that were the most succesful and did well on the charts. alot of the music that you people like that did not make the list is probably cause they weren't that great. Just because you like it doesn't mean its the greatest! you have to get peoples opinions. This is an accurate liste except for a couple songs in there. Many good songs were left out i have to say like

Stone Temple Pilots: Interstate Love Song and or Plush

Candlebox:Far Behind Smashing Pumpkins:1979 and Cherub Rock Seal:Kiss From a Rose Blind Melon:No Rain

Guns N'Roses:November Rain any song from Garbage would be cool. Hole should of been here also like maybe "asking for it" slave to the grind by skid row some dave matthews and Blink 182

Dougrad 2 years ago

I also thought at first that they just took songs that were the most successful on the pop charts, but I noticed that a lot of the rock songs on this list never even touched the pop charts. I really wonder how they compiled this list. And of course, I expected "Smells Like Teen Spirit" to be #1, since people still think of Nirvana as the band that singlehandedly killed hair metal. Also, where is Michael Jackson? He had some big hits in the early 90's, like "Black or White" and "Remember the Time."

OHYESI'MRIGHT(: 2 years ago

lol uhm,,,i don't think this list is accurate..i mean most of it is right but i think some of it is a little off...it seems different than what i watched on VH1..maybe not though..i think the people did a good job voting. these songs were ALL huge hits. and the reason there is so many pop songs is because that's when pop music REALLY changed..was in the 90's. think about it. before britney spears and backstreet boys and even hanson..there was michael jackson and madonna..and that was more in the 80's..although their music carried into the 90's, people wanted something new and fresh, and that's what they got!!! i do think black or white or even you are not alone by MJ should have made the list..but also at the time, people didnt really LIKE michael jackson when this list was made. LMAO. think about it...he was kinda like...forgot about lol..sad i know..but the list varies. it has a little bit of everything. its fair. not completely accurate. nothing campares to you is one of my favorite love songs, but even i dont think it should have made the top ten. the reason smells like teen spirit got number one is because that song..and well nirvana in general changed ROCK music! once again, before nirvana or pearl jam..there was all the 80's bands that weren't making shit anymore. NIRVANA changed rock music for the decade, they changed it to something more grungy and mysterious and LOUD! lol..think about it..before nirvana there was all the rock bands like ACDC. lol so if you REALLY think about it. they deserve the top spot. that song, changed rock music!!! some of the songs like "poison" and "o.p.p." should be murdered off this list. where is boys 2 men??? and jewel's, "meant for me"??? it seems like they put a lot of songs that weren't that popular...lol

And that's why 80's pop music was so much better than 90's pop, is because Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, etc. actually had raw talent, unlike all those boy bands and teen pop princesses. And I wouldn't say that Nirvana changed rock music, or changed rock music for the 90s. I think it would have happened anyway. Both listeners and critics were getting tired of the crappy hair bands (like Nelson, who somehow made it onto this list), and record labels just happened to be looking for a bands with a different rock sound at the time. And grunge had been around in the 80's, but it just wasn't popular at the time. Nirvana just happened to be in the right place at the right time, when it was ready to really blow up. Plus, Alice in Chains, another Seattle grunge band, came out with the Number 50 song on this list, "Man in The Box," in 1990, a long year before "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out, and before anyone had ever heard of Nirvana. And it was a hit too! I think that song was the one that first helped open peoples' eyes to a different rock sound that could also be popular on the radio and MTV. I also think that Faith No More's "Epic," which was also big in 1990 and should've been on this list, was another song that helped in that regard as well.

Way to suck a dick whoever made this list.

bugzz 23 months ago

Umm.... i was born in 1994 and i grew up listening to 80's and 90's music i'm 15 now and all i really listen to is the old music but i have no clue what most of these songs are... I recognize a few songs but the rest, i have no clue.

Vald 23 months ago

The list has some good songs, I was born in 90 and grew up listening to this music. There are a few injustices in this list.. Most of them have been stated above, but one that I didn't see anyone mention was the abscence of SmashMouth. In the late 90's I think starting in 97 with walking on the sun and then in 99 with their album Astro Lounge made a big impact on the music world. And as everyone else said, Smashing Pumpkins Stone Temple Pilots, The Verve, etc... The list is flawed, but over it is still a decent list

EURODANCE 23 months ago

The list is a total crap. VH1 is full of Old grandpas and grandmas. This is not one single Eurodance song in the list.

This should be included:

Rhythm Is A Dancer - Snap!

Barbie Girl - Aqua

What Is Love - Haddaway

Mr Vain - Culture Beat

It's My Life - Dr Alban

Another Night - Real McCoy

This type of lists always annoy me. Obviously a list with those corny cheesy faggets of backstreet boys at number 2 hasn´t got a single trace of credibility. In fact this list is outrageous. Where are Prodigy, Fatboyslim, blueboy, mike mechanics, rage against the machine, grunge bands, and acid jazz bands like brand new heavies, incognito, and so on??? Ricky martin, n Sync, Madonna, britney, Christina aguilera at the top??? WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS? VH1 should be burned right now for difamation of the most wonderful decade ever

blablabla 23 months ago

What about Marilyn Manson or Green Day??!!

Zac 23 months ago

what about one sweet day mariah carey & boyz to men?

Doogie 23 months ago

i agree, Joshua. if you notice, most of these songs went to "Number 1," or close to it, back in the day. this list is obviously just a list of the most popular, best-selling songs from the 90s, which would explain why Backstreet Boys, Sir Mix-A-Lot and Britney Spears are all in the top 10. Even though they sold millions as singles, I Want it That Way and Baby One More Time weren't even the best quality songs from those "artists," if you can even call them that, and "Baby Got Back" was always a joke song that was only played for a good laugh. There needed to be more timeless, good quality 90s songs on the list, not just a flood of the best selling singles and artists of the decade. There should have been quality songs of the same caliber as the good top-tenners, which included Smells Like Teen Spirit, One, Waterfalls, Losing My Religion, and Nothing Compares 2 U. I wish Vh1 would do a Part 2 of this and include more of the good quality hits of the decade, and less of the hits from boy bands, pop princesses, Latin Don Juans, and now-embarrassing rappers from the early 90s. the one thing I don't get, however, is how they chose the rock songs. they left off a lot of good, popular 90s alternative rock songs that were also pop hits, but they included alternative rock songs that weren't even popular to begin with, like Liz Phair's "Never Said," The Breeders' "Cannonball," or Live's "I Alone" ("Lighting Crashes" would have been the "pop" pick for them). unless they were heavily into 90s alternative rock like I was, the average person has probably never heard some of the rock songs on that list.

Anon 23 months ago

I find it interesting that some of these songs, like Ice Ice Baby, Achy Breaky Heart, and Two Princes and were also on Vh1's "50 Worst Songs Ever" list. therefore, how did they get on here? and I don't understand why people think Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit "changed the future of rock forever," which would explain why it's Number 1, even with all those teenybopper songs closely following it. "Teen Spirit" only killed off the hair bands, which were still popular in '90 and '91. grunge and most good, grungy alternative rock became unpopular by the late 90s (with the emerence of teen-pop, alterna-light rock, third-wave-ska, and rap-metal and nu-metal). there hasn't been any kind of resurgence in alternative rock's popularity, since its peak of the early or mid 90s.

Alex 22 months ago

No Aerosmith. No Gun's and Roses. What the Fuck?! Some of the awesome rocks songs on the list(there were very few) should have been ranked much higher. I mean they got beat out by the Backstreet faggots,... erm, Boys!? This list really is crap. The only thing good about this list is Nirvana being at Number 1!

ALex 22 months ago

Also screw you Anon, the person who commented above me. Smells like Teen Spirit is one of the Greatest rock songs of all time, i don't care what anyone says. Everything has to end at one point including hair bands. I personally love the Hair bands and classic rock. They always win me over compared to alternative rock. You know there are still bands who make good alternative music nowadays. It may not be as popular as the crappy Rap and Hip-Hop shit, but it is still pretty good and i would say that bands like nirvana have influenced these bands in someway. Geesh practically wrote a book, but i think i got my point across.

This list is okay. Not the best but some are okay.

It really pisses me off that everbody is dissing the

backstreet boys. They are amazing and deserve to

be number 3 if not higher. They should have more

than one song on there. Most people would know the

words to I want it that way and more of there songs.

They were amazing and still are. Along with people like

Madonna and Brittany spears. I don't like either one of

them but I know there songs and like some of them.

Sometimes u can't help but like it because they are amazing.

And tere music was and is really good.

So stop dissing the backstreet boys. I love them and have for

a long time. They have beautiful voices and great music. And

have been around for 17 years and are still amazing and have

sold out tours still. :) :) :)

to the guy who told me to screw off, i never said that Nirvana sucked or didn't deserve to be at "Number 1." i agree that they were a great band with great albums and great singles. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is well-deserving of being called a classic. i just said that I don't get why people, mostly today's young people, say Nirvana changed popular rock music "forever," and talk about them like they were the Beatles of the 90s. they didn't really represent the "sound of the 90s" and they weren't really "the rock band of the 90s." i mean, come on, Nirvana was only in the musical spotlight for three years in the early 90s (1991-1994), before Kurt killed himself in April of '94, and their musical style became pretty unpopular by the start of the late 90s. by the late 90s, teen-pop like Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears was the dominant form of popular music, and third-wave ska, mellow pop-rock, nu metal, and rap-rock/rap-metal were the most dominant forms of rock (although commercialized hard rock music in general wasn't even that popular during the late 90s, only a few bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit were really popular). i was in high school during the musically horrid late 90s, and i remember back then kids would laugh if you said you were still into grunge.

anon 20 months ago

i think so many songs got left out simply because there were "too many" popular songs that came out in the 90s. they couldn't include them all in a list of only 100 positions. with each decade that passes, there are more and more songs that come out and become popular, and well over 100 of them. therefore, i'd hate to see how many good songs they'll leave out for their "100 greatest songs of the 2000's" list.

Commy hater 20 months ago

The problem with a list of 90's greatest hits, if you truly wanted to put the best songs it would be covered with grunge, pop-punk, and other alternative rock. Green Day and Nirvana would dominate the list. Half of their songs were bigger hits than these. Maybe some Pearl Jam in the mix. And Blink wasn't even mentioned. They were the soundtrack to all of 1999

Anonymous 20 months ago

Chuck 20 months ago

I think they tried to make it so that each band only appeared once on the list. Wonder if that's why they didn't list Foo Fighters since they were descended from Nirvana. But yeah, they should've been more clear on what they meant by "greatest". Most influential? Most popular at the time? Your personal favorite song (you'll get 1000 answers if that's what they mean)?

Smells Like Teen Spirit being #1 makes me think they're trying to say "most influential" since it didn't sell nearly as many copies as a lot of stuff that didn't even make it on the list. But then what the heck are one-hit wonders like Marcy Playground, New Radicals, and Hanson doing on there in place of STP, NIN, and Marilyn Manson (and several others)?

PN 20 months ago

It was about time that they did a '90s list. They were on the '80s for 3 to 4 years. I'd love to see what the 2000s list is like-- a lot happened that decade too. I think the '90s is the toned down decade--remember how most people toned down their looks that decade, versus the over the top looks of the '80s. They returned to it in the 2000s. And I agree with many, that Boyz II Men should have been on that top 100 list--they had over a dozen hits in the '90s. End of the Road was No. 1 for some 12 weeks! Maybe the VH-1 staff that compiled the list might not have listened to the group during its prime; most of those people might have been into rock bands, pop or rap artists or other R&B artists at the time. So you have to think about that with '90s artists being overlooked.

it's simply a list of the most then-popular songs from the 90s. there's no other reason why so many now-crappy "recycled-pop" songs from would be on the list, and you have to remember that these songs were huge and well-loved in the 90s, but probably wouldn't be if they came out in today's pop music world. notice how some of the most popular, radio-ready, and not-necessarily-the-greatest artists and songs of the decade (like Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Backstreet Boys, N'sync, Eminem, artists with huge one-hit-wonder songs, etc.) are all in the top 40? and i bet they threw heavy-sounding, less popular rock songs from Metallica, Beastie Boys, Soundgarden and Radiohead in there just so the top 40 wasn't "completely pop." and as a side note, wasn't Destiny's Child's Say my Name (#17) a single in 2000, not '99?

justifier 20 months ago

i can understand people being mad about Janet Jackson not being on here, since she had several huge hits in the 90s, but Michael? the only noteworthy thing he did in the 90s was the Dangerous album, which had only one good single, Black or White, which wasn't even that good compared to his 80s stuff. after that came his disappointing flop album titled HIStory, which had no good new singles, unless you count that crappy-sappy ballad You are not Alone. and that was it for his albums in the 90s. he didn't do anything again until 2001's Invincible. people forget that Michael was not really recording and performing all that much in the 90s.

jess 20 months ago

NIRVANA is and will always be the greatest band ever. R.I.P Kurt we miss you guy.

Andrew 20 months ago

This list is terrible! Modest Mouse and Neutral Milk Hotel are excellent bands that should be present here. And I can't even begin to understand why What's Up by 4 Non Blondes and No Rain by Blind Melon are not on this list. And Radiohead's Creep, number 31?! Complete Rubbish!!! All I agree with on the list is Smells Like Teen Spirit at number 1.

dougrad 20 months ago

come on, it's Vh1. sure, i like Modest Mouse and other bands like them, but they're not going to include indie bands that weren't on commercialized radio or MTV/Vh1 in the 90s. it's a list of the most popular songs of the 90s. the same goes for the guy who thought bands like Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson should be on here. they're too "heavy and scary" for a Vh1 best of list.

Clint Cooper 20 months ago

This is just a collection of songs that a bunch of teenage musician wannabes grabbed off the top of their heads. No thought went into this whatsoever you can tell. The fact that "Kiss from a Rose" is nowhere near the list proves this. Idiots.

wockaflockasucks 20 months ago

yes the 90s rock scene was the pinnacle of human civilization. but now, the music has died.

I Want It That Way definitely reached #1 in the U.S. as it was the Backstreet Boys' first number one around the world

dougrad 20 months ago

i guess i can understand why teenybop acts like backstreet boys, n'sync, britney and christina are on here, since they were huge worldwide and had some pretty big hits, but why is Color Me Badd on here? they were considered a joke even back in the 90s. come on, who can really say that "i wanna sex you up" was a "great" song?

kristina 20 months ago

does it matter? i agree and disagree with alot of these songs, but all n all it takes me back to the time and reminds me of all my favs from them....glad i'm not the only 1 who likes to close my eyes and pretend i am back there....i remember trying to ruch and hit record on the tape player to catch my fav, not just download it...kids have it made and dont even realize it now!

yeah well thats why alice in chains was on the list too lol is because Alice In chains changed rock music as well. but nirvana was consistent with their music. the lead singer of alice in chains was on drugs baddd like worse than kurt cobain was..lol he killed himself in 03' (long after kurt kobain) and guess what?? people had pretty much forgot about him until they heard about him dying because he didnt make shit..lol terrible huh? but nirvana like i said before..was way way wayy more consistent than alice in chains!! thats why they were the bomb!! haha but god that song "man in the box" is really somethin else, such a beautiful song, that guy really had an amazing voice. such a shame he died :( and kurt...

WTF?....Anony 3 months ago

to the guy who told me to screw off, i never said that Nirvana sucked or didn't deserve to be at "Number 1." i agree that they were a great band with great albums and great singles.

WTF??? Again....guys what music hear the baby's songs or WHAT?

deas 19 months ago

Good decade i love it..., now we all hear some piece of shit song like ugliest lady gaga song and gaga becoming into the world and internet sensation and people like it, it so style over substance, what the f#*king hell with people right now???!!!, come on realize that...

Joel 19 months ago

Completely agree with all the people wondering where the hell Rage is on here. Just pick even ONE song to represent the band and the impact they had on music in the 90's, like Gorilla Radio, which got a LOT of radio play. Anything! I was hoping they'd include one of the many fantastic Ben Folds Five songs but I realize they're not super popular. To me "Kate" may be the best pop song of the decade. And yeah - no "Song 2" by Blur?? WTF? There are some pretty shitty & non-influential songs on here that need to be replaced.

Lukin 19 months ago

The top 10 should be Jeremy, Alive, Even flow, and everyother other pearl jam song written in the 90's (that wouls also include daughter, animal, better man etc.) What a joke. Good thing they got the brokeback boys, sir-sucks-alot and Brittany train-wreck-Spears in the top ten though. Whoever made this list should be shot.

It is unbelievable that sublime is not on this list. Easily one of the most influential bands of the 90's with many great songs. Santeria or What I Got should have been one the list. Brittany Spears is in the top ten???? F-you voters.

i kinda understand why all the laughable novelty and kiddie pop songs are on here, since they were quite popular in the 90s, but how did Cher's "Believe" make it to the list? a simple computer-generated techno beat, overuse of auto-tune, and Cher's donkey-esque voice doesn't make for a "great" song in my book.

joshua 18 months ago

God damn it this list sucked. It was okay, that's how far I'll go. No, Biggie? No, Death Metal, Black Metal, Thrash Metal (only Metallica fuck them), Gothic metal, Techno (Prodigy) and others. This list was lacking some approach. God damn it, if I had to put a list together, it would be a mix from 8-bit to West Coast Hip-Hop. They need more grindcore and Death Metal.

Grunge was only a 90's genre and Death metal was getting popular. Where's that?

Caren 18 months ago

Okay, I agree with Ryan. Mariah Carey should have had a few more on the list. Vision of love showed her talent, but it definitely wasn't her best.. where is "Honey" "Fantasy" .. etc.. AND JANET, should have at least had "That's The Way Love Goes" on here. That song defined her in the 90's. And also, Madonna should have had MANY on here. Ray of Light - Erotica - ETC.

AND ALSO, where is the good oasis? And ALL the good rap music (tupac biggie.. etc) that led to everything anybody listens to today. This list is purely based on billboard 100. Corrupt list. What happened to VH1 & MTV being about MUSIC, and not what's popular, and what was?

What do you expect? People who watch VH1 made the list.

DiBBS 18 months ago

Where is Boyz II Men? There were like pretty much the biggest male R&B group of the 90s? They went Diamond for god's sake.

And That's the Way Love Goes by Janet Jackson?

And to the Michael fans, Black or White indeed went #1 but it for sure wasn't one of his most memorable hits like in the 80s countdown where Beat it AND Billie Jean made the cut. The 80s was Michael's prime and the 90's was Janet's so where is TTWLG.

And I'm SOOOO suprised to not see the Macarena on this list. Thank god.

miss the 90s 18 months ago

i think boy bands and teen pop princesses created the downfall of popular music and MTV in the 90s. looking back now, it doesn't seem like '97 through '99 were even really part of "The 90s" we all remember and love. i blame the Spice Girls for starting that huge pop movement. but it is kinda weird that while my older sister and i got to grow up with alternative rock being popular during our youth, my younger sister had to grow up with teen pop being insanely popular during her youth. i'd say there were almost two different 1990s in a way.

no mj 18 months ago

if you thought the MJ obsession was bad on this page, you should check out the Vh1 best of the 80s page. tons of people are all upset that Michael had "only" two songs on that list. it's crazy how death can cause a once-mocked artist to become worshipped.

slightly entertaining, but many flaws… I enjoyed watching the list but when the top 10 came up still with no NO DOUBT or SUBLIME I was shocked and immediately angered… I mean I get that they didn't have The Wallflowers, or Cake, but come on people!!!

Alison 18 months ago

People have to remember that this is a genre-nonspecific list. If it were a 90's alternative or post-grunge list, bands like Green Day and Beck and Cake would be all over it. I myself am a huge Green Day fan and also agree that Basket Case should replace Good Riddance, only because sales wise, Basket Case was a larger hit. People just remember Good Riddance more because it got more air play and more popularization because it's acoustic, not a 'punk rock' song.

Lot's of great songs on here but they tried too hard to equal out a few different genres.

Not everyone can make the list obviously but at knee jerk reaction the two biggest missed are Everlast's "What It's Like" and Sublime's "What I Got" have held up better than most songs on the list as they continue to play on modern stations still today - something that 50% if not more of this list can't say the same.

Jason 18 months ago

I mostly like this list, brings back memories. Don't get why some are on it tho. I have a feeling when the 2000s list comes out a lot of the great songs from early 2000 will be overlooked ;like Blink 182, Train, and 3 Doors Down just to name a few, because of the newer pop music. I hope this isn't the case.

Jason 18 months ago

i'm surprised that such a timeless song like the Foo Fighters' Everlong could miss the cut, yet crap like Hanson, Backstreet Boys, MC Hammer and Britney Spears makes the top 20. most of the songs on this list are horribly dated and don't get played on stations anymore (when was the last time you heard MMMBop or U Can't Touch This on a modern pop station within the past 10 years? hmmm? i can't remember) the songs like Everlong and others that still get airplay today on modern pop or rock stations are mostly all missing. they should have gone for undated-sounding songs that still sound fresh and great today, like they did with the 80s list. and also gotten rid of jokey, bad-quality crap like Sir Mix a Lot's Baby Got Back, which somehow made the top 10.

Adam 17 months ago

Many of these songs belong on the worst songs of the '90s list. It seems that the main criteria was how many records were sold, even if most of those records were tossed out a couple of years later. I remember the '90s as being a time of some excellent music. You forgot the Pixies, But**ole Surfers, Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney, Hole, the Wedding Present, Jawbreaker, Fugazi, They Might Be Giants, Big Black and Sonic Youth. I don't think the Backstreet Boys, Nsync, Hootie & the Blowfish and Barenaked Ladies are quite as compelling.

Marcus 16 months ago

This list is VERY flawed...Where is Shanice's "I Love Your Smile" (one of THE MOST memorable pop songs of the entire decade..and you rock music fans have no choice BUT to agree, cause it's the damn truth!). I didn't see Michael Jackson's "Remember the Time" either..and both of these songs were Waaaaaaaaaaaaay popular than most of the songs on the list...hell, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was NOT all THAT POPULAR anyway....the urban/R&B music crowd didn't even know who the hell Nirvana was, nor cared.....yet, EVERYBODY was singing "I Love Your Smile" and "Remember the Time".....cause urban/R&B in the 90s WAS MORE POPULAR THAN GRUNGE ROCK BULLSHIT, which was why it CHARTED ON THE TOP 10 MORE THAN GRUNGE ROCK CRAP SONGS! This list SUCKS

Marcus 16 months ago

@Craig, are you smoking something? Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" was LEGIONS upon LEGIONS more popular than "Smells Like Teen CRAP"...remember, ONLY the SMALL PERCENTAGE of people (Grunge rock fans) KNEW or CARED about Nirvana...a VERY forgettable band that the WHITE MEDIA has always trumpted. At the end of the day, they were FORGETTABLE and had next to no hits..."Smells Like Teen Spirit" STRUGGLED to even reach #4 on the Top 10, and the video was GARBAGE and CHEAP!

Great List - Brings back a lot of memories. Think they missed on a lot of the R&B/Hip-Hop/Rap songs, but that's me. Some I knew, most I'd never heard before - and could think of others I heard more back then.

John 16 months ago

Wow! "End of the Road", "I'll Make Love To You", "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday", "One Sweet Day", "Water Runs Dry", "On Bended Knee" just to name a few. How the hell do you leave Boyz 2 Men off the list? They broke the record for consecutive weeks at number 1 on the charts...TWICE! This list is friggin retarded! VH1 proves once more why it's a pathetic network!

i agree with the previous commenter who said Nirvana was overrated, and that it's weird to put them at number 1. seriously, Smells like Teen Spirit was only big for a few months in '92, and then nobody really cared about Nirvana by the end of that year. rock radio and MTV only started playing Nirvana again after Kurt shot himself, which gave him "rock god" status. yet, everyone seems to think they were this amazing band that "changed music in the 90s." just how long was grunge music popular again? two years, maybe? as i recall, grunge was pretty much a passed and dead fad by the mid-90s.

i have to agree with a lot of the comments posted.....backstreet boys? come on, fresh teens r the only one's that listened to them. they were nothing more than a pretty face just like N-'stink'......i wanna know what year the person that made this list was born in. yes there r some pretty great songs on the list, but u guys SERIOUSLY need to re-think and make another album. try goin around and asking people what they'd like to hear on the list rather than just throwing in some crap that no one else listened to. out of this whole list, there's maybe 10-15 songs top that i actually like.

I think the list becomes lame when you find that no bands/singers have more than one song on the list. How can you say this is the Top 100 songs yet limit yourselves? I'm sure that Nirvana's 2nd GREATEST song is better than most of these (i.e. Barely Breathing or Never Said).

list critic 14 months ago

this list is more like the most "memorable" songs of the 90s, not necessarily the "greatest." voters were probably pitching in songs that they remembered the best, even if they didn't think they were such great songs that would stand the test of time. "i want it that way," "baby got back," "baby one more time," "u can't touch this," and "MMMBop," which are all in the Top 20, are examples. memorable songs? of course. but GREAT songs? not really. also, some of these songs weren't even really well-known hits, or hits at all, like the included songs by Liz Phair, Geto Boys, Sophie B. Hawkins, The Breeders, Missy Elliott, and Alice in Chains.

Noah 14 months ago

Really is some bull shiza. If nothing else, Tool needed to be somewhere on the list. Given, they hardly make it onto any top 100 charts, they still sell out every show, every time. Plus, how many of these bands are still together with their original members growing as artists and not capitalists? I really don't think you can make an accurate list in which metallica and hanson only two positions from each other.

uhm, where the HELL is bush and gin blossoms and candlebox? theirs a little too much pop in this list and the 90s was not mostly pop, it was mostly rock. i think "you" by candlebox could definitely have replaced rico suave. i was born in 1995 and i feel this list is very misleading, though i wasnt around to experience it unfortunately, i listen know, and these songs dont scream 90s the way other iconic songs of this era do. my opinion.

Tara 14 months ago

Nirvana

missing the 90s 14 months ago

it's good to hear you say that, Daisha. i was worried that most teenagers today associated the 90s with boy bands, teen-pop princesses, and all the crappy one-hit pop wonders on this list. but there really was so much good rock to come out of the decade, and it's too bad that almost none of it is represented here (but there is the obvious Nirvana choice at #1, of course). plus, i think most true music-loving people who lived through the 90s have fonder memories of the rock that came out of the decade.

this list is simply the "most popular songs of the 90s," not the "most timeless songs of the 90s that still sound good today." i bet most people wouldn't be caught dead playing some of these songs today, or having them on their Ipod. and there's a reason why you don't hear these songs on the radio anymore. i sure don't know anyone who still listens to Backstreet Boys, Britney, Christina, N'sync, Hanson, Spice Girls, MC Hammer, Vanilla Ice, Celine Dion, Ricky Martin, C+C Music Factory, etc. this list is more like a 90s pop music canon for people to look back on and say, "wow, we actually loved those songs back then?"

I'm not gonna rant about how bad this list is, but rather how some bands were completely omitted from this list. It just goes to show poeple don't have good taste in music.

Here's some examples: Primus, Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, Cake, Collective Soul, The Flaming Lips, Foo Fighters, Gorillaz, Modest Mouse, Sublime, etc...

cmmns3nse 10 months ago

ok so this list was based off of charts in the 90's so for those who think that other bands should be on this list then they should of had highly ranked hits that made it on the charts, sorry but quit complaining. For some people these songs bring back great memories so to put this down and calling this list crap is simply opinion NOT FACT!

doogie 10 months ago

well, this list is crap, but i agree with you that this list was mostly based of off 1990s Billboard pop chart top 20 hits, with a few exceptions thrown in there. that's why you don't see many good 90s rock songs on here. pop stations in the 90s hardly played any of the good alternative rock, or good rock in general, that you'd hear on rock stations back then. that's why they mostly just went for the most popular hits that were big on pop radio when assembling this list, which makes it surprising, however, that they didn't include Boyz II Men or Ace of Base on here.

WHERE THE $%&^ IS MICHAEL JACKSON?!?!

He was the greatest artist who ever lived. He made better, & more meaningful songs than anybody. And he every song he made in the 90s were great.

"Heal the World"

"Earth Song"

"You Are Not Alone"

"They Don't Care About Us"

COME ON!

A MUSIC LIST IS NOT A MUSIC LIST WITHOUT THE KING OF MUSIC!

LET'S GO VH1, LET'S BE SMART HERE!!!

doogie 9 months ago

hate to break it to you, Pao, but MJ kinda sucked for the majority of the 90s. sure, Dangerous was a good album, but that came out in '91, and it was all downhill after that. the HIStory album, well just Disc 2, from '95 sucked pretty badly. i really could only see Black or White as being a good enough song from his 90s output to make the list. certainly not one of his overly-dramatic "change the world" songs like Heal the World or Earth Song. the real surprise is the fact that his sister Janet isn't on the list. she had plenty of number 1 hits in the 90s and was right up there with Mariah and Whitney in terms of 1990s diva popularity.

Umm... What? 9 months ago

I want to see a list with the best music on there, not necessarily the most popular. In some cases, there is a big difference (i.e. The Backstreet Boys/Brittney Spears). I'm having a really hard time understanding how there isn't any Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, or any other great bands that made 90's music what it is. When I think 90's, I'm not thinking Spears and Backstreet Boys... Just saying...

randomshitter 9 months ago

Yeah, MTV sucks ass, this songs are boring and not cool, naw just kidding, I'm bored just writing randomshit, the truth is that I dont really give a shit about this songs or the damn 90's, I'm doing a research for school abut this point in time, ok then suckas I'm out,

david mackaye 9 months ago

The 90s was an okay decade for music. The bubblegum pop bimbos like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were such shit and the boy bands were all crappy singers but the 90s was mostly good. NIN should have been on here though. The Smashing Pumpkins not being here is a tragedy. How in creation did the Macarena not get on here? Don't get me wrong ,I hate that song ,but it is the greatest one hit wonder of all time! BNL's song should have been If I Had A 1,000,000. So much better than One Week! Green Day should have had one more song ,Welcome to Paradise ,Longview ,or Basket Case ,all could have been on there. Tonic ,Deep Blue Something ,and ,like them or not ,Smash Mouth ,should have all been on there. Mambo number 5 should have been there too. I'm sorry people but ,apart from the pot smokers of the decade ,no one knows sublime. Nelson looked like two sweeddish bimbos in the 90s. I'm glad they cut their hair. Alice In Chains should have had Would on there as well. In chart standings that song was much higher than Man On The Box and since this list is based on the pop charts ,(as evidence by all bimbo pop ,boy bands ,and rap crap ), that should have been on the list. Nirvana needed more representation as well. They could have at least put In Bloom on the list to go with Smells Like Teen Spirit. The 90s were an okay decade for music but this list needs some huge changes.

The 90s were an okay decade for music but this list needs some huge changes.

getty 9 months ago

Sublime SUCKS!!!!!!! People PLEASE get over it! Those pot head retards should not be on any greatest list ,unless it it the greatest pot smoking songs list. I bet the entire list is Sublime then! But they do not deserve to be on the 100 greatest songs of the 90s list! They do not deserve to even be on the 1000 greatest songs of the 90s list! Wake up world PLEASE!!!!

It's a disgrace that not one single Michael Jackson song has made it in the top 100!!!!

Doog 9 months ago

i can't believe people are complaining about Michael Jackson not being on the 90s list. people forget that his music in the 90s wasn't all that great, and that it got REALLY bad once he put on the laughable HIStory album in '95. the 80s was the decade of MJ's good music, not the 90s. the people whining on here are probably teenagers who didn't experience how irrelevant and unpopular MJ was in the 90s, because they were too young or not even alive. i remember how starting in 1993, when i was 12 and MJ had his first child molestation accusation, and afterward, MJ was the butt of every joke kids came up with in junior high and high school. kids would make fun of you if you said you liked him. he was definitely not cool for most of the 90s. and yeah, i also agree with those people above that Sublime sucked. i also find it strange how they included all the pop crap from the 90s, like the boybands and pop bimbos, but they included heavy songs like Alice in Chains' Man in the Box, which was never a pop hit and song that most people wouldn't know. they need to make a separate best ROCK songs of the 90s list. you can't have Hanson and Celine Dion right next to actual good artists like Metallica and Beastie Boys on a "best songs" list.

Second where are the smashing pumpkins they were better than three fourths of this list and why no more greenday? I don't get it!!!!!!!!!! P.S the backstreet boys are for suckups with no life and 5 year olds

Someone said awhile ago that ''the singer of blink-182 sounds like a whiney bitch in their songs''.....Whiney bitch or not, blink has defined a generation with their music which is why they deserve a spot in this list.

Other than that, I would have liked to see No Doubt and a few others in this list. Oh well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Not a bad list, actually.

this is how it should of gone. Britney spears should of been #1 then TLC,Biggie,Spice Girls,Christina aguilera. get BSB out of the list and the rest is fine.

How can the Smashing Pumpkins not be on this list? 1979 is by far my favorite song of the 90's. There should be more Red Hot Chili Peppers too.

ok there are many things wrong with this list. First of all where are: Rage against the machine, Smashing Pumpkins, Guns N' Roses, Boyz 11 Men, Smash Mouth, and for God sakes wheres The Foo Fighters.

Anyone wants to explain to me how Backstreet Boys are #3, REALLY?. How is Britney Spears #7/ Why is Oasis #35 it should be top 5. I agree though with the top two though.

'Dapo 7 months ago

Obviously VH1 got it all WRONG leaving the Great BOYZ II MEN! U wonder what the hell they were thinking! Uh oh.... must've been some typographical error.

Ah! 90's, the days when music used to be about real love not about what it is now.

today songs like I Wanna F*** you have become great hits.2000's is/was a horrible era,90's was maybe the best.

BSB deserved to be in the top 10,though not a 3 and Britney certainly didn't deserve it.

interesting how a lot of these songs were on Rolling Stone's recent "Worst songs of the 90s" list. with this chart, i think they were mostly going for the biggest hits on the pop charts in the 90s, and as i recall, there weren't many rock songs or even good songs in general that were big pop hits in the 90s, unlike the 80s, which saw a lot of good rock songs become pop hits.

OK, so here I was about to wax satyrical about the old days, but here I have sh*tloads of other old farts doin the same dam thing....man I feel old...and I only just turned 38 TODAY! Yay, my birthday anniversary!....

This new crap just don't do it for me anymore, especially since this bullsh*t (insert nationality here) Idol came along.

Simon Clown should be ashamed...supposed to be a big music producer, yet reduced to trying to commercialise his friggin job...way to go loser.

Can't find them on his own,so he needs other has-beens to try and find the next flash-in-the-pan.

Way to go, douchebag.

Now we gotta waste our time listening to the crap you had to listen to when you started off...@sshole.

Screw you for inundating our earholes with rubbish, when there were perfectly good tunes to listen to in the friggin first place.

BTW, who remembers who won one of those FIVE YEARS AGO? And do you still listen to them?

Didn't think so.

There's a reason why they get called classics. Everybody knows them, even if it's just a passing knowledge of the melody.

IDOL MUST DIE!!!!

Let's put that clown out of a job.

Nuff said.

Peace out, Y'awl

The real f***ing top 10 list

1. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

3. TLC - Waterfalls

4. Alice In Chains - Man In the Box

6. Aaliyah - Back & Forth

7. Boyz II Men - Motownphilly

8. Red Hot Chili Peppers - Give It Away

9. Mary J. Blige - Real Love

And Spears, the BSB, Madonna, Sir Mix-A-Lot, NSYNC, Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, Christina Aguilira, Hanson, Ricky Martin, Right Said Fred, Gerardo, Billy Ray Cyrus, Nelson, and especially the Spice Girls should all be taken off this list.
